Everyone loves a good deal — and giving your customers a discount at the right moment can be the difference between a sale and an abandoned cart. Catlog gives you flexible tools to run discounts across your product catalog, whether you're clearing inventory, running a seasonal sale, or rewarding loyal customers.
Two Ways to Discount Products
On Catlog, there are two levels at which you can apply discounts to products:
Individual product discount price — Every product has a discount price field. You can set a lower price on any single product and it will display as a discounted item on your storefront. This is great for one-off promotions on specific items.
Discounts feature — When you need to apply a similar discount across many products at once, the Discounts feature is what you need. Instead of editing each product individually, you select multiple products and apply the discount in one go.
What the Discounts Feature Does
The Discounts feature lets you run promotions at scale. Here's how it works:
Choose your products — Select as many products as you want to include in the discount. You can choose a handful or your entire catalog.
Set the discount amount — You can offer either a percentage off (e.g., 15% off) or a fixed amount off (e.g., ₦2,000 off). Choose whatever makes more sense for your promotion.
Set a maximum discount cap — This is a particularly useful control. It lets you define the maximum amount you're willing to give off on any single product, regardless of the percentage.
Here's an example of how the cap works. Suppose you set a 10% discount with a cap of ₦5,000:
Product Price | 10% Discount | Cap Applied? | Amount Off |
₦20,000 | ₦2,000 | No | ₦2,000 |
₦35,000 | ₦3,500 | No | ₦3,500 |
₦80,000 | ₦8,000 | Yes (capped at ₦5,000) | ₦5,000 |
The cap protects you from giving away more than you intended on high-value items, while still making the promotion attractive on your mid-range products.
Controlling When Discounts Are Active
Running a time-sensitive sale? No problem. Catlog gives you a few controls to manage when a discount is live:
Toggle on/off — Activate or deactivate a discount at any time. This is useful if you want to set up a discount in advance and turn it on manually when you're ready, or quickly pause a promotion.
Expiry date — Set a date when the discount automatically expires. When the date passes, the discount turns off on its own — no need to remember to go back and remove it. Perfect for flash sales, holiday promotions, or limited-time offers.
Why Use Discounts?
Discounts are a versatile tool. Here are some common ways merchants use them:
Seasonal sales — Run a clearance sale at the end of a season by discounting last season's items all at once.
New product launch — Offer an introductory discount on a new product to encourage early buyers and generate reviews.
Clear slow-moving stock — Apply a discount to items that haven't been selling as fast as you'd like to give them a boost.
Flash sales — Use the toggle to run a surprise sale for a few hours, then turn it off. The urgency encourages quick purchasing decisions.
Category promotions — Discount all products in a specific category — for example, all accessories or all items in a particular collection.
Discounts are one of the most effective levers you have for driving sales volume. Used strategically, they can help you move inventory faster, attract new customers, and reward your existing ones — all without having to manually reprice every product one by one.
